Global data: Zinc production has rebounded this year

Global zinc production will recover 5.2 per cent to 12.8m tonnes this year, after falling 5.9 per cent to 12.1m tonnes last year, according to global Data, the data analysis firm.

In terms of production from 2021 to 2025, the global figures forecast a cagR of 2.1%, with zinc production reaching 13.9 million tons in 2025.

Mining analyst Vinneth Bajaj said Bolivia’s zinc industry was hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, but production has started to recover and mines are coming back into production.

Similarly, mines in Peru are returning to production and are expected to produce 1.5 million tonnes of zinc this year, an increase of 9.4 percent over 2020.

However, annual zinc production is still expected to fall in many countries, including Canada, where it will fall 5.8 per cent, and Brazil, where it will fall 19.2 per cent, mainly because of scheduled mine closures and planned maintenance closures.

Global data suggest that the US, India, Australia and Mexico will be the main contributors to zinc production growth between 2021 and 2025. Production in these countries is expected to reach 4.2 million tons by 2025.

In addition, the company highlighted new projects being developed in Brazil, Russia and Canada that will start contributing to global production in 2023.
